History of New Heart MCC/UCC

Our church began as a parish extension of MCC Seattle. During our first year one meeting per month was held in someone's home.

In October 1976, a feasibility study begun with the hope of establishing an MCC in Tacoma. On October 31, 1976 we held our first worship service with 21 people in attendance.

Since then we have worshiped in many different locations and have gone through many changes. We have had our ups and downs as a congregation, but we are a dedicated group of people determined to be a church on the Go and on the Grow for all people.

On November 5, 1989 , we changed our name to New Heart Metropolitan Community Church which came from Ezekiel 36:26. ... I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

This new name has many theological meanings for our congregation, " Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! " (II Corinthians 5:17)
Through faith in Christ we have become new creatures; a royal priesthood and a people for God's own possession.

New Heart symbolizes for us a new beginning. We are a church which affirms the promise and Good News that is ours through Jesus Christ. We are a church which believes in the wholeness of everyone. We believe that all people can be complete spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically.

On May 5, 1991 we held our first worship service in our new church home at 2150 S. Cushman, Tacoma, WA.; a building of some historical significance in the local area.

November 29th 1992 Rev. Jan Skaggs became our new pastor and introduced a new era in MCC leadership in Tacoma.

Pastor Jan leads a committed staff of volunteers, deacons, Directors, and other members in a wide range of church and community involvement programs.
